PARISH & OTHER REGISTERS
Church of England Parish Registers

Sileby parish registers have survived from 1568. They record births, baptisms, marriages and burials in the parish. In the main, the registers are fairly easy to read but in some parts they suffer from the phonetic spelling and awful handwriting of the parish clerks compiling them. Some pages have faded with age and a few entries have been deliberately erased. There are gaps in the record, significantly during the late interregnum and in the 1660s. These gaps reflect the chaotic nature of the local church at the time, with the removal and replacement of a number of church officials.
The parish registers are held at the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland (ROLLR) currently (2024) at Wigston, Leicester.

Nonconformist Denominations

The 17th century saw the rise of nonconformist groups in the parish, particularly during the civil war period and shortly afterwards. Baptist and Quaker sects were the first to organise themselves, later followed by the Methodist societies in the 18th and 19th century. Early registers were mainly of baptisms and marriages; all except the Quakers were buried within the parish churchyard until the late 19th century. The registers below have Sileby residents listed for that denomination.
