PARISH CHURCHYARD
OUTSIDE THE CHANCEL

These 14 gravestones are situated in the ground between the boiler room and the south wall of the chancel. CH13 is the gravestone of Edward Barradell and his wife. It is a notable and often quoted example as it mentions his 52 years as parish clerk tolling the bell and singing psalms, etc. Also, it is widely believed that these rows were the location from where PC Wilkinson was shot and killed in 1903.

Come my friends & acquaintance all In wasting sicknefs & disease I lay,
Prepare for death before the call, By slow degrees my pow’rs consum’d away ;
My loving Wife and Children dear, How oft I wish’d the friendly hand of Death
Live close to Christ for time draws near ; To ease my pain, and stop my feeble breath
Likewise all ye, when this you see, To take me hence remote from ev’ry pain,
Prepare your selves to follow me. And land me fafe where joys eternal reign.
